The former Decorative Panels International plant is a large, complex site with environmental considerations that had to be addressed before demolition could move forward. From the start, the focus has been on doing the work safely and setting the property up for whatever comes next.
Starting with the Hard Part
Before any structural demolition could begin, our teams completed extensive asbestos abatement throughout the main manufacturing building and power plant. That early work is critical on industrial sites of this scale and sets the tone for everything that follows.
With environmental prep complete, demolition is now well underway.

 Big Structures, Real Progress
The main plant structure is currently about halfway down, and demolition continues to move forward. The size of the buildings and the logistics involved make this a true heavy industrial job, handled by Melching crews and our own equipment.
This is where experience matters. Careful planning, coordination, and consistent execution keep the project moving safely and efficiently.
Safety and Compliance at Every Step
Throughout the process, we continue working closely with regulators to ensure all work meets environmental and safety requirements. Proper handling, documentation, and disposal remain a priority as the site transitions from demolition to cleanup.
Looking Ahead
Once demolition and environmental work are complete, the property will be positioned for future redevelopment. While there is still work ahead before the site is fully shovel ready, the progress made so far is a major step in moving the property forward.
Why This Work Matters
Projects like the former DPI plant are why Melching exists. Large industrial sites with real challenges need teams who can take ownership of the work and see it through without shortcuts.
We’re proud of the progress our crews are making in Alpena and will continue sharing updates as this project moves ahead.
